Where does the money that is donated to United Way go?

United way directs voluntarily contributed funds to support human and health service programs of accredited local non-profit agencies.

Who uses the services of United Way?

United Way does not directly provide the services. The role of United Way is to finance human care services provided by its member agencies in accordance with the priority of current community needs. One out of four of us in the Lewis County area are a recipient of services provided by a United Way funded agency.

Does United Way of Lewis County support other communities?

United Way of Lewis County raises and distributes funds to local member agencies that serve the needs of Lewis County area residents and employees of local businesses that support United Way. Some of these agencies may be located in various communities. Other communities have their own home-based United Ways to serve the needs of their residents.

Can I specify what agency I give my money to?

United Way of Lewis County does honor donor designations to its member agencies.

What percentage of donations actually goes to help individuals how much goes for management and salaries of United Way?

Nearly 90% of all funds raised goes back into the community to help where help is needed most. Because of outstanding community support and volunteer board of directors, fundraising, management and general expenses (including rent, insurance, salary for 4 full-time employees, taxes and benefits, office supplies, postage, etc.) are about 12% of the total operating budget. Compared with the national average of nearly 25%, you will see that United Way is cost efficient.

If you call the United Way office, will they direct you to an organization that will help with your specific problem?

The local United Way will connect the individual to the appropriate member agency or to other community resources for their specific need.

Why isn’t my favorite agency a member of United Way?

United Way maintains an open door policy with respect to an agency applying for admission. Not every agency may be admitted because they may not meet the qualifications, another agency may already be providing the same service, or because the volunteer board of directors did not feel that the agency was prepared to be admitted at this time.

Will my donation be used on lunches and fancy parties?

No. All United Way meetings are self-supporting by the attendees or paid for by community-minded businesses.

Does United Way help only the poor?

United Way services are directed toward all sectors of our community for the benefit of everyone. Examples of broad-based services include: family counseling; health diagnostic programs; youth (prevention) programs; senior citizen services; and hospice care. None of us know when a tragedy will strike and when we will need help. Everyone benefits from living and working in a healthier, happier community.
